Beginnings
Some quick background: about 5 years ago I started dabbling in creative writing again, having abandoned it years earlier after college for a career in visual communications. I didn't really have an idea of what I wanted to write about but I had the idea for the opening, in which two figures carry a third through a midnight storm toward what they hope is some form of salvation waiting on the shore. So, in what little spare time I had (my first child was 1 year old at the time), I just started banging it out and seeing where the story went. It was exhilarating. As much as I genuinely love illustrating, this was an entirely new arena of creativity, and I was hooked. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Over the next few years I finished the first draft then began the laborious process of editing, revising, researching agents & publishers, attending conferences, querying, etc. More posts on all of that to come. It's been an overwhelming amount of work but as anyone who writes can attest, it's a genuine labor of love. Hope you enjoy the finished work as much as I do.
